Everything We Need For Godly Living

2 Peter 1:3-15  seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledgeof Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.  4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.  5Now for this very reason also, applying all diligencein your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge;  6 and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness;  7 and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love.  8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.  9 For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins.  10 Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble;  11 for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.  12 Therefore, I shall always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you.  13 And I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder,  14knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.  15 And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you may be able to call these things to mind.

The Apostle Peter refreshes the memories of the followers of Christ concerning the things that are most important for godly living. He wants there to be no fall out in their faith. He reminds the believers that God has given them divine power and everything that is needed pertaining life and godliness through TRUE KNOWLEDGE. God is able to keep that which we have committed to Him against that day. How powerful is God’s divine power? His power is ALL POWERFUL! Over all power! Power to speak into existence and power to shake the world and all that is therein.

Peter also reminds believers that God by his glory and excellence has called us. We are not our own! He has called us!

Peter has great concern for the flock he tended lest the devil/crafty one snare them.

Peter desires that none of those who were following Christ would fall away by the deception and craftiness of the wicked one. Although they/we were living among a corrupt people, believers are to have no part with the darkness of the wicked one. We are called and chosen to come out from among them and be separate a people. Peter instructs and appropriately gives warning of the evil plots of the devil.

Peter desires to have precious fruit to the glory of God. He doesn’t want his labor to be in vain. IT IS POSSIBLE TO FALL AWAY FROM THE FAITH. It’s possible to lose your salvation. We are instructed to ENDURE TO THE END!

Paul spoke to the church and said this…(1 Thessalonians 3:4-6  4 For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.  5 For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labor be in vain.  6 But now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you.

PAUL SAID THIS TO THE CHURCH AT PHILLIPHI (Philippians 2:15-16 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; 16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.)

PAUL SAID THIS TO THE CHURCH AT GALATIA: (Galatians 3:1-4  KJV O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?  2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?  3 Are ye so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?  4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.)

PAUL SAID THIS TO THE CHURCH AT CORINTH: (2 Corinthians 5:20 - 6:1 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.  21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. KJV 2 Corinthians 6:1 We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.)

DON'T LET THE GRACE OF GOD UPON YOU BE IN VAIN!

Peter reminds believers that God has given us everything we need to live Godly in this present world. Peter instructs followers of Christ to be diligent and alert.

THE TRUTH IS: We Can Live Godly In This Present World

PROVISION MADE: Through God’s Divine PowerKnowledge & Promises

BELIEVERS PARTAKE IN HIS DIVINE NATURE: His Spirit is within us

OUR DUTY: We are to make Effort (work, pursue, push, and apply ourselves, struggle, chase, diligence

These are things we must to live Godly in this present world. These are things we must continue in and build upon so not to receive the grace of God in vain! — WE ARE TO ADD, TO BUILD UPON:

  1. Diligence
  2. Moral Excellence
  3. Knowledge
  4. Self-Control
  5. Perseverance
  6. Godliness
  7. Brotherly kindness
  8. Love

WARNING, don’t lack these qualities: he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted. It seems that lacking these qualities refers to a person being blind and renders him/her vulnerable and lacking to pure and godly character.

If the believer doesn’t PRACTICE THESE THINGS, he/she will stumble and fall. (“be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble”)

Peter says, “God has shown me that my departure/death is imminent. ”Peter wants them to remain in Christ and his full success. Like a parent on his death bed, Peter gives spiritual instruction and wisdom for the success of those he has invested in.

Peter is looking ahead and seeing that wolves. Wickedness is prevalent among them. He sees that the wicked one is always on the prow. Peter wants nothing to deter, hinder or entrap those who have received the good news of Jesus Christ.
